Sounds that happen when you turn a corner
Any sound that occurs when you are turning a corner is highly likely to be related to the steering linkage of your vehicle. It may be damaged or in need of lubricating – either way, you need to get it to a car body shop for further analysis or you run the risk of potentially causing an accident when your steering goes all screwy.
Clunking noises when you brake
Obviously, your brakes are a very important part of your vehicle; they are there to keep you safe, and as such, if you notice any issues at all around your braking system, you should have your car checked out by a qualified mechanic straightway. This is no more true than when you notice your brakes are making a clunking noise because it could be a sign that your brake caliper is damaged or incorrectly fitted, which could be disastrous.
Hissing under the hood
If you hear a hissing noise emanating from under the hood of your car, especially when you first turn the engine off, it’s a pretty clear sign that you have a leak somewhere in your car. This could be oil or coolant, which is leaking and landing on the engine, causing the sizzling sound to emerge. It could also mean that your engine is overheating, so don’t just leave it alone and get someone to check it out.
Loud bangs
Loud bangs are never a good sign when it comes to cars, so if you hear a sound that’s akin to someone sticking a firework up your car’s tailpipe, you know that your car has backfired and there is almost certainly a problem, whether that be a catalytic converter that is not working as it should or an air-fuel mixture that isn’t quite right, that you need to sort out.
Engine knocking
If your engine is knocking, then you might want to take a look at your vehicle’s user manual to check you’re using the right gas and oil, and that the tire pressure is as it should be because a knocking engine can often be the sign you are doing something less than optimal for your vehicle.
Roaring on acceleration
If your vehicle produces a roaring noise that gets louder and more fierce as you accelerate, you are going to want to check out the exhaust system because this noise could be an indication that it has undergone some damage. If that’s not the case, it could be that your transmission needs some attention, or that your clutch is slipping if you drive a manual vehicle. Explore all of your options until you can get the roar to stop.
Car noises are often startling, but it’s surprising how many people just ignore them live with them. If you hear any of these noises, that is the last thing you should do, so be sure to see a mechanic.
